1,000 Japanese paper cranes take flight at SickKids

SickKids patients to receive cranes as symbol of hope and healing

TORONTO – On Thursday, May 1, SickKids Foundation will launch Meagan’s Walk with a Japanese Crane Ceremony for patients at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). More than 150 students from schools across the city will gather on the front lawn of the hospital to perform ‘Meagan’s Song’ and participate in this traditional ceremony for hope and healing. During the event, 1,000 paper cranes will be presented to four SickKids patients who have survived brain tumours.

The Crane Ceremony is a prelude to Meagan’s Walk 2008, an annual walk held every Mother’s Day to honour Meagan Bebenek who passed away in 2001 from an inoperable brain tumour. The five-kilometre walk begins at Ontario Place and ends in a human chain around SickKids as participants embrace the building as a symbol of strength and support.

CoreMicro, a leading provider of flash memory cards used in cameras, cell phones, music players and other electronic devices, is the presenting sponsor for this year’s Meagan’s Walk.
